I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Isaiah 14:14
This is taken from the passage in Isaiah 14:12-17 where satan was cast out of heaven. He was the most beautiful angel in heaven but because of pride, he was not satisfied with that. He wanted to be like God Himself. He allowed pride to come in and distort what God had created him to be.
He wanted to be worshiped so he persuaded a third of the angels to follow him instead of God. Because of this, God cast him and that one-third of the angels out of heaven and there is a theory (which I tend to agree with) that this probably happened between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2. If you notice, it says in Genesis 1:1 that God created the heavens and the earth. And then in verse 2, it says the earth was without form and void. Why is this if God had just created the heavens and the earth? Since everything God created was perfect, then the earth would not have been without form and void. So, it stands to reason, that something must have been happened to cause this. In Luke 10:18, it says that satan fell like lightning from heaven. [This is probably why it says in Proverbs “pride goeth before a fall.”]
I imagine that when this happened, it would have created such a force that it destroyed the earth (or “messed” it up pretty bad — anyway it was no longer perfect). God does not and can not tolerate any sin in heaven so I am sure His wrath was kindled just a little when He cast him out. So because of this pride that Lucifer allowed to enter into him, God not only cast him out of heaven but He caused him to become like a worm who was very ugly to look upon. Instead of being the most beautiful angel in heaven, he became the ugliest of ugly, a worm. That is what sin does to you — it can take you from the palace to the pit and turn your world upside down. What once was beautiful and good becomes ugly and bad!
One day, if you know the Lord as your Savior, you will be able to see what the devil (satan) really looks like and you will be able to say “Is this the one? The one who caused me so much pain in my life — who caused so many problems for me? Is this the one?”
How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!
how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven,
I will exalt my throne above the stars of God:
I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying,
Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;
That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof;
that opened not the house of his prisoners? Isaiah 14:12-17
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. Genesis 1:1-2
And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Luke 10:18
